PING!

Local college baseball got rolling tonight when Stanford hosted Cal State Fullerton. Let me just say that it was good to see baseball again. Special thanks to Kyle McNary at Stanford for making photo coverage by TDA possible. Bad blood between these teams, they met in the College World Series last year and there was a beanball issue.

Here's a panorama to get things going, click on it to enlarge:

Jerry Pritikin dropped me this note, I figure the best place for it is The Bullpen

Much Ado About Nothing
Once again, Kazuhito Tadano is back in the news, mostly on the sports pages. When he was younger, he participated in a gay Japanese porno movie. He said he was in need of money and proclaimed he was not gay. Again he has denied he is homosexual. I happen to be an openly gay male who has been very involved in gay politics and sports and the gay press. I happen to believe that being gay does not make you better in sports, politics or being a better hairdresser. It is my opinion one should be judged on their personal stats and not religious or sexual preferences before voting or cheering for someone.

"Kaz" denies being gay, it's his right. Just as it was President Clinton's right to say he did not "in-hale". Sometimes it is better to look at someone then try looking through that person. I hope for the sake of his fans and teammates , that he will be judged on his baseball ability not his past decisions, right or wrong or politically correct!

Satchel Correction
When it comes to the stats, the place to go is baseballreference.com. I was a little surprised to see them list Satchel Paige's stats in error. I had discovered a decades-old screwup in the late 1990s, and this lead to a change in Paige's official statistics for 1948. It seems as if baseballreference.com had been using an old database. In any case, a few minutes after I sent e-mail, Sean Foreman sent a reply noting that he would make the proper correction.

Baseball-Almanac.com has also updated their Satchel Paige page to reflect his correct stats.
