AAGPBL Interview - Betty YahrBetty Yahr played for Rockford in 1946. Here is our interview with her. 1) How did you get interested in playing baseball and where did you play before you turned pro? I played recreational ball before turning pro. I started playing sandlot ball with my brothers and their friends. 2) Describe your signing. The scouts offered me a contract and I signed in Pasagoala, Mississippi. 3) What position(s) did you play? Which teams did you play for? I played rightfield for the Rockford Peaches. 4) What was the best thing about playing pro ball? Being offered the opportunity and playing. 5) What was the worst thing about playing ball? No bad memories, it still carries on, good memories and stories. 6) What was the highlight of your career? I had a great fielding record. And being honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. 7) Do you think the fans and press accepted you more as the years wore on? (Describe how it was when you started. Did increased exposure change some minds?) The fans and mens professionals were more acceptable as time passed. Special events commemerated the league in later years. 8) Who were your favorite big league ballplayers during the era you played in? Babe Ruth. 9) Do you follow big league ball now? If so, how do you think it compares with your day? I follow my hometown Detroit Tigers. Technology has changed the game; glove shape and size, baseball manufacturing. Training has improved. 10) Should women have their own pro league, should they play in the majors, or should we have both (a women's league and the chance for the best women players to play in the majors?) I support women's leagues, but support has to be provided for improved recognition and opportunity. 11) How do you feel about the Silver Bullets? ? 12) Briefly describe your life since your pro career ended. Prosperous, healthy, influential, great great Aunt. Still playing golf, driving and living a quality life. 13) What advice do you have for young women who want to become pro ballplayers? Develop the confidence and do it! 14) Any other memories or comments?Many fans are still asking for baseball cards and comments.
